Porn in Libraries
Ok, this is a sensitive issue, but I really do believe that people should be able to view (legal non-child) porn in the library, not just stuff that might be mistaken for porn (like information about breast cancer, homosexuality, or Lady Chatterley’s Letter) but actual meant-to-make-you-horny porn.
That said, people should NOT masturbate in the library. Period. I also beleive that other patrons have a right to feel comfortable in the library, so pornography viewing should be allowed in such a way that other patrons aren’t bothered/don’t notice. I suggest screen covers but shy away from placing such terminals in remote corners of the library as I think this would lead to masturbation and/or people trying to view illegal pornography.
Perhaps there could be “privacy stations” where patron sits in full view of the librarian and other patrons, but his/her screen is not viewable. Patrons could view pornography…or check their bank balances…or video chat (there’s an idea!) in limited privacy and no one need be the wiser. This is not great, but it’s better than filtering the Internet and making people ask to have the filters turned off.
